Hundreds of construction workers from India and Nepal have already died since the announcement of the World Cup being held in Qatar.
That is a very large number of people compared to the six workers who died during preparations for the World Cup in Brazil, or the 25 construction workers who died before the more recent Olympic Games in Sochi.
Sharan Burrow from the International Trade Union Confederation is quoted as saying: “Fifa needs to send a very strong and clear message to Qatar that it will not allow the World Cup to be delivered on the back of a system of modern slavery that is the reality for hundreds of thousands of migrant workers there today.”
Previous reports have uncovered the poor working conditions in Qatar, including a lack of access to drinking water and being forced to work in extreme heat up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
