ONLINE REACTIONS TO RUSSIA’S ANNEXATION OF CRIMEA
On Tuesday, Vladimir Putin signed the bill to absorb the Crimean peninsula into Russia, and as we can see from the dozens of photos doing the rounds online, Ukrainian web users have reacted strongly, offering the middle finger salute in front of their television sets as the Russian president delivered his speech; they say Russia is seizing part of their country, and they will never accept it.
Russians are far from angry however and have taken to social networks, hailing Vladimir Putin`s decision to annex Crimea. Some of his supporters have been using the keywords “Thank you for Crimea Putin”, happy the peninsula will be joining Russia and criticizing the Ukrainian government for failing to look after it properly.
The situation has generated widespread commentary on the web and, it seems, has inspired comedians from all over the world. There are all sorts of photomontages and parodies circulating online, somewhat offbeat creations like this drawing by Armenian web user Zinvor; depicting Vladimir Putin celebrating Russia`s annexation of Crimea.
 
ICELANDERS DEMAND A VOTE ON EU ACCESSION
51,566 people, so around 21 % of voters in Iceland have signed this online petition, demanding a vote on joining the European Union, after the government dropped its EU membership bid without holding a referendum. The move has angered many across Iceland who want to have a say in whether or not the country continues its membership negotiations that began in 2009.
