At least 49 people were killed when ten bomb blasts occurred in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and the southern province of Babil on Tuesday (February 18).

According to CNN, three blasts occurred in Baghdad and seven took place in Babil province in the south. The blasts attacked mainly Shi'ite districts in the capital, killing at least 14 people. Other bombs were detonated in and around the city of Hilla and the nearby towns of Haswa, Mahaweel and Mussayab. A total of 35 people were killed by the blasts.

BBC reported that all Tuesday's attacks were caused by cars parked in or near commercial areas and bus stations.

The attacks came just a day after four bomb blasts went off in various areas of Baghdad, killing at least 25 people.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for any of the attacks. However, Shi'ites are often targeted by Sunni Islamists who have been gaining control in the country over the past year and have overran several towns in recent weeks.
