A 3-year-old boy survived a fall out of a third story apartment window on N. Pass Avenue in Burbank, California. He was saved by a neighbor with good hands and a mattress on Sunday.
Konrad Lightner and his wife Jennifer, were moving out of their apartment when they noticed a 3-year-old boy and his sister throwing stuffed toys from a third story apartment window. The Lightners yelled for him to stop but the next thing they knew, the young boy started to climb out the window.
The couple happened to be moving a box spring at the time and positioned it under the toddler who was luckily caught in the phone wires on the side of the building. Jennifer called 911 while Konrad was in position to catch the boy in case he fell. The wires gave out and the boy fell two stories into his arms.
Mr. Lightner caught the boy and set him on the mattress until rescue officials arrived. The boy was not seriously harmed in the fall but was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. Mrs. Lightner told ABC reporters, "It was very surreal afterwards. We were just moving the rest of the day and every once in a while we'd look at each other and just be like, 'That happened. That was real."
The parents of the boy were reportedly in another room when he fell and they ran outside at the sound of the commotion. The local fire department presented Konrad Lightner with a Burbank Fire Department challenge coin which is given to those who display heroism.
The Lightner couple was stuck in an elevator for 30 minutes earlier that day which was another factor in them being at the right place at the right time.
