Three Chinese coast guard vessels sailed through Japanese territorial waters near the disputed islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China on Monday (January 27).
According to the Japan Daily Press, the vessels were found to have entered one of the Senkaku island's 12-nautical-mile territorial waters at around 9 a.m. They stayed within the waters for about two hours. The Japanese coast guard asked the Chinese vessels to leave, but a person on one of the Chinese ships reportedly answered in Japanese and Chinese that the "Diaoyu" islands are part of China and that therefore the Chinese vessels were not violating any laws.
The incident came days after Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made comments at an international forum in which he compared current Sino-Japanese relations to those between Britain and Germany before World War I.
