Two men and a seven-year-old girl were killed in an ambush carried out by gunmen in the southern Thai province of Narathiwat on Monday afternoon.

According to the Bangkok Post, the incident took place just before 4pm in Rangae district.

The victims were travelling home on a pickup truck after running an errand in the village when at least two gunmen hiding in roadside bushes opened fire at their vehicle.
One of the passengers was hit by multiple shots to the torso and head and died instantly

The assailants then came out onto the road and fired more shots at the pickup, hitting the girl in the chest and killing her.

The other man, injured in the attack, tried to escaped into roadside bushes but the gunmen shot him in the back before leaving the scene.

Police found 12 spent cartridges from AK-47 rifles at the site, the Bangkok Post quoted Pol Col Jiradej Phrasawarng, chief of Rangae police station as saying.

The victims were identified as Ismael Dawrauh, 35, and Assanai Jaeso, 32.
The girl's name hasn't been confirmed yet.

Investigators have blamed separatist militants for the attack.
