Pakistan cinema blast: two grenades kill at least 5

At least five people were killed and 31 injured after a bomb exploded in a Pakistani cinema on Sunday, February 2.

According to reports, the blasts happened in the northwestern city of Peshawar, in the Picture House cinema, as it is known locally, in Qissa Khawani Bazaar.

While the explosions caused at least 5 dead, a stampede following the blasts it is believed to have been responsible for many of the injuries.

According to reports, the attacker was seated at the back of the theatre, among the crowd, when he hurled two hand grenades in the dark. According to witnesses, the 9PM show of "Ziddi Pashtoon" movie was showing at the time of the attack.

Superintendent of police Peshawar city Muhammad Faisal Mukhtar confirmed the incident and the death toll.

According to Mukhtar, the death toll however is expected to rise as there were more than 100 people watching the show at the time of the blasts.

According to reports, the incident occurred due to poor security as people entering the cinema were not properly checked at the gate.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to the Dawn, currently only seven movie theatres remain open in the city of Peshawar. The decline of the cinema houses it is related to Taliban insurgents, who see films as sinful and closed down some of the cinemas during the time they controlled the Swat valley, from 2007-2009.
According to AlJazeera reporter Kamal Hyder, from Islamabad, Sunday's attack happened at a time when the government of Pakistan has announced the formation of a committee to hold talks with the Pakistani Taliban.
