A 76-year-old woman was killed by a train while crossing the tracks in Yilan, northeastern Taiwan yesterday (March 6th).
The accident happened at around 9am when the elderly woman named Chen wanted to work in her garden located on the opposite side of the Taiwan Rail Authority's rail line. She apparently crossed the rail at a point where no fence or crossing alarm is installed as a shortcut for her convenience. She was struck and thrown about 35 meters away by a Taitung bound express train, and fell down into a nearby ditch, dying at the scene.
The train, Tze-Chiang Limited Express #208, was carrying 350 passengers on board when it passed the accident scene. TRA suspended operations on the line for 65 minutes to investigate the accident.
Taiwan railway staffs addressed their condolence to the deceased's family while Chen's cousin is blaming the railway company about their lack of security on the track right-of-way.
