Two police officers in Langzhong city, Sichuan province, China beat a homeless man's dog to death in public last Tuesday (March 4). The dog's owner watched silently for more than 10 minutes as his dog was struck with a long steel fork and a shovel, until it was lying motionless. He couldn't let go of it even after it was beaten to death.

The incident sparked outrage among Chinese netizens, particularly among web users on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter, who accused the police officers of acting brutally.

The officers claimed that they killed the dog for the safety of others after receiving a tip that it had rabies. Chen Yao, one of the officers who killed the dog, admitted that he felt uncomfortable about killing the homeless man's dog, according to Sina news. However, Chen claimed that he had to obey orders and hoped the public could understand why they killed the dog.
