Search goes west for missing aircraft

US officials helping with the search for missing Malaysia airliner say they're shifting the search west.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JAY CARNEY SAYING:

"It's my understanding that based on some new information that's not necessarily conclusive, but new information, an additional search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean. And we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy, but I don't have anything more on that."

That's consistent with the theory that the Boeing 777 may have detoured to the west about an hour after take-off from Kuala Lumpur.

But Malaysian officials are not holding out much hope.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MALAYSIA AIRLINES COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR HUGH DUNLEAVY SAYING:

"We are actually searching that part of the geography (the Indian ocean), but the likelihood of the aircraft being there is probably very very low."
