He is known as the Last Man of Fukushima.

Naoto Matsumura has steadfastly disobeyed orders from Japanese authorities to leave his home deep inside the disaster zone.

He was meeting with Green MEPs on the third anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami.

Michèle Rivasi, a French Green MEP, that said “that the accident has cast doubt upon the safety of nuclear plants in Europe.”

“Fukushima showed that if there is an earthquake then a tsunami, what amounts to reinforced safety no longer works.”

But supporters of nuclear energy say it has a place in the EU’s future energy mix, as Europe tries to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Despite the accident in Fukushima, they say that nuclear power has a strong safety record overall.
