An old Chinese saying goes, "no human deed can escape God's sight." Now we know you can't escape a parrot's sight either.
A screeching parrot helped solve the murder case of her owner, 45-year-old Neelam Sharma, who was stabbed to death at home on Feb. 20 in Agra in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Her husband, Vijay Sharma, an editor of a Hindi daily newspaper, returned home to find both his wife and pet dog stabbed to death. The house had also been ransacked, with jewellery and cash stolen. The only survivor, Heera, a green parrot, was left stunned and fell into an unusual silence after witnessing the killing.
Heera finally broke her silence when she saw the victim's nephew, Ashutosh Goswami. She started shrieking and flapping around the cage as Ashutosh walked by, according to Vijay. "It was clearly distressed about something and only calmed down when Ashutosh left," he said.
The parrot's also displayed her distressing behavior every time Ashutosh's name was mentioned.
Growing suspicious, Sharma's family spoke his name in front of Heera and the parrot started shouting "Usne maara, Usne maara," meaning "he has killed." That's when Vijay called the police and told them of his suspicion.
Upon questioning, Ashutosh confessed to the crime. He said he and his accomplice, Ronny Massey, intended to steal from his aunt's house but were caught in the act by his aunt. They killed her to prevent her from reporting them. Ashutosh also admitted killing the dog because it wouldn't stop barking.
They never considered killing the parrot as it had been silent in its cage.
Both of the suspects were arrested on Feb. 26 and charged with murder and looting, according to the the local Senior Superintendent of Police.
