Amid protests, Venezuela to remember late Hugo Chavez

Thousands of protesters in Venezuela march through the streets of Caracas, demonstrating against the socialist government of Nicolas Maduro.

Wearing mostly white, they shouted: "We don't want a dictatorship like Cuba".

These protesters are also demanding the release of dozens of activists detained since demonstrations began a month ago.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PROTESTER, MARIA GABRIELA PEREZ, SAYING:

"We need to continue in the street, we need to oust this government already. For example, I don't have children but I want them. I don't want them to have a country with a dictatorial and repressive government for the world."

Groups of activists again clashed with the national guard. This kind of violence is not uncommon...at least 17 people have been killed since the unrest began.

Tension is high ahead of planned events to mark the first anniversary of the death of President Hugo Chavez, who led the country for 14 years.
