The Higley Elite 100 ranks the top one hundred richest neighborhoods in the US based on the mean income of each household along with census data from the American Community Survey 2006-2010.

According to professor Stephen R. Higley from the University of Montevallo in Alabama who compiled the list, three of the top five richest communities in the US are located in Maryland near the Washington DC area.

Topping the list as the only neighborhood in the study with a mean household income of over six hundred thousand dollars a year is the Golden Triangle neighborhood in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Number two on the list is the Bradley Manor-Longwood area of Bethesda, followed by Potomac Manors, both located in Maryland.

Other areas that made the top ten include a neighborhood in Coral Gables, Florida, at number 4, and another area of Potomac, Maryland in the number 5 spot.

East Lake Shore Drive in Chicago came in at number six, followed by a neighborhood in McLean, Virginia, two neighborhoods in Newport Beach, California and finally Greenhaven in Rye, New York coming in at number ten.

The census does not include incomes above $2 million, which likely affects the rankings of super-rich areas in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
