Obama condemns reported military actions of Russia in Ukraine

President Barack Obama called on Friday (February 28) the reported military movements taken by Russia inside Ukraine "deeply" concerning and warned against any use of military force in Ukraine.

"Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing, which is not in the interests of Ukraine, Russia or Europe," Obama said. "It would represent a profound interference in matters that must be determined by the Ukrainian people. It would be a clear violation of Russia's commitment to respect the independence and sovereignty and borders of Ukraine and international laws."

His statement comes after armed men seized control of two regional airports in Crimea, the southern peninsula region where Russia's Black Sea fleet is based and where a majority of the population is ethnically Russian and speaks Russian as their native language.
