New York Knicks guard Raymond Felton arrested on felony gun charges

New York Knicks guard Raymond Felton was arrested for gun charges on Monday. He is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and criminal possession of a firearm in the second degree. Felton turned himself in to authorities at 12:50 a.m. after the Knicks' loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Felton's wife, Areane Raymond-Felton, gave the semi-automatic FNH Five-Seven 28mm handgun to Manhattan police with seventeen bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber. She told police that Raymond waved the gun around when they argued on at least four different occasions. The two had been married for 19 months before Areane filed for divorce Feb. 18.

Prior to going to the police, Areane's lawyer called Felton's lawyer, Michael Stutman, to have the gun sent to him. Stutman refused and told them that his client was playing in a basketball game. After the game, police approached Feltman in the Knicks locker room. Felton later turned himself in to police with his lawyer.

If convicted, Felton faces a minimum three-and-a-half years in prison. Felton posted the $25,000 bail and was issued an order of protection from his wife. His next court date is in June. Felton may deny possession of the gun or try to portray his estranged wife as unreliable in his defence. The New York Post reported that he bought the gun legally while in college at North Carolina.

Felton plans to continue playing for the Knicks, but the NBA may consider a suspension. New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress served almost two years in prison when he was convicted on similar charges in 2008.
