One woman in Canada is spreading her bizarre and scary tale to alert vehicle owners and buyers that sunroofs can be dangerous.

A sunroof is a popular option that makes it onto many car shoppers’ wish lists. However one woman in Canada is sharing her bizarre and scary tale to alert vehicle owners and buyers that sunroofs can be dangerous.

Viola Stevens had been driving a little over 60 miles per hour on an expressway in Alberta when all of a sudden the glass on her sunroof exploded. The rear seats and console were covered in tiny pieces of sharp glass.

She reflected on the incident stating ‘It was extremely loud. I was in shock. I pulled over, and promptly started crying and then realized I was in an SUV convertible and it was snowing and minus 22.’

Once reality set in, Stevens took the vehicle to the nearest Kia dealership. Her sunroof was replaced at no charge.

However she soon learned the exploding sunroof problem is not without precedent among Kia Sorentos and other comparable models. In the US, there have been 15 reports of shattered sunroofs pertaining to Kia models between the years of 2011 and 2013.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the Kia Sorento SUVs, which may lead to a recall if a defect is suspected.
