Tabelog sued by secret Osaka bar for posting its information online

The owner of an exclusive Osaka bar has filed a 3.3-million-yen (US$33,000) lawsuit in Osaka District Court against a gourmet website for declining a request to take down the bar's information.

The bar is located in a two-storey building without a sign. A placard bearing the words "Don't open the iron door" is posted outside the main entrance. Customers are allowed to enter only if recommended by regulars or the owner's friends, which is a major selling point for the bar.

Somehow, photos of the bar were posted on the the Tabelog website without permission in November 2012. Since then, the owner has received a surge of complaints from regular visitors, saying the publicity has cost the bar its appeal. The 45-year-old bar owner asked Tabelog to delete the posts, but it declined, citing the right to freedom of expression.

The bar's owner says Tabelog is spoiling its operating strategy. He is suing to seek compensation from the website and make it take down its post. The owner added that the bar's gorgeous interior decor is stunning.
