The leader of a pro-Thai government faction Kwanchai Praipana was shot and wounded in front of his house in Udon Thani province on Wednesday morning (January 22).

It is reported that gunmen drove up to the fence outside the victim's home where they fired up to forty shots at Kwanchai from a distance of 100 metres. Kwanchai sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his right arm and leg, but is not in critical condition.

This incident took place just a day after Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra declared a state of emergency in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces amid escalating protests.

In recent days, protesters have been attacked by unknown assailants. One person has been killed and and dozens injured in three separate grenade attacks. The Thai government and protesters have blamed each other for the anonymous attacks.

Protests against Yingluck's government began in November. Since then, at least nine people have died and hundreds have been wounded, according to authorities.
