A third-year law student from Keio University was arrested last Friday for abetting a suicide. The 21-year-old student, Taishu Watanabe, stands accused of sending seven text messages to his ex-girlfriend encouraging her to kill herself.

Watanabe is said to have dated his classmate for one year. His ex reportedly dumped him the day before she committed suicide. Watanabe faces charges for sending seven messages, starting November 8, via mobile messaging application, Line. In the messages, he asks the woman leap to her death.

The woman sent text messages to friends, subtly letting them know that she wanted to end it all. She also apparently left her parents a suicide note. She jumped from the eighth floor of an apartment building in Minato-ku, Tokyo on November 9.

Several days later, police identified Watanabe from communication records, thanks to an anonymous tip indicating that he provoked the woman into taking her own life. Watanabe confessed to the crime during questioning.
