An iconic piece of history is scheduled to be for sale in the Czech Republic. The Schindler Factory isn’t currently in the best shape but there’s room for potential with a little hard work.
If the Schindler name sounds familiar, that’s because Oskar Schindler was once the owner. He could be described as an unlikely hero, having saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish families during World War II. His story was documented in the 1993 film Schindler’s List.
These days, the abandoned factory is basically crumbling.The factory saw a succession of owners as a textile manufacturer but approximately 10 years ago it went bankrupt, and has been subject to a string of civil and criminal lawsuits since then. Those are reportedly close to resolution.
According to the local mayor, the facility would be ideal for a light industrial development or it could be revamped to serve as a Holocaust museum. However the politician did mention that in the factory’s current state ‘it looks like Dresden after the bombing’.
The machinery that previously rested inside the building was stolen. The once heavily secured WWII-era doors were removed and windows are left broken.
Textiles dyes and other toxins were dumped on the property grounds. The cleanup efforts alone are estimated to cost about $2 million.
The hope is that an investor will scoop up the factory and fix it, hopefully providing jobs for the roughly 1300 residents who call the small town of Brnenec home.
