Lonely Planet recently released its list of the world’s bests, and taking the top spot in the extraordinary hotel category is the Mihir Garh in Rajasthan, India.

Described by the site as ‘an enormous sandcastle’ the hotel took 2 years and the efforts of over 100 local artisans to build.

Among the unique construction elements of the desert resort is a custom plastered floor, the technique for which is know by only one man in the region.

Details throughout represent the local visual culture and history.

The amenities are quite impressive as well.

Each of the hotel’s 9 suites features a plunge pool or Jacuzzi and a private courtyard or terrace.

On chilly nights, guests can curl up in front of the fireplace, an original creation handmade by women from nearby villages.

Activities offered by the resort include wildlife sightseeing via horse. If picnics are more your thing, the property offers elaborate alfresco meals served in secluded spots and accessible by camel if you choose.

Nightly rates for the rooms range from about 275 to 550 dollars.
