Rocks and boulders aren’t typically associated with having a lot of monetary value. Thieves in Australia apparently disagree with that and recently swiped a massive rock from Canberra's National Rock Garden.
The multicolored quartz rock weighs about three quarters of a ton. It was donated to the garden by a mining company to reflect Victoria's gold rush history.
The yet to be captured suspects would have required heavy machinery like a crane to lift the rock. The quartz piece had been placed on top of a larger rock and secured with pins.
Authorities aren’t quite sure why the exhibit was targeted, but some suspect tiny flecks of gold inside the rock may have attracted the thieves.
Said the Rock Garden's chairman Brad Pillans “They've trucked the rock away. They may well try to crush it up and extract the gold. The silly thing is they've caused thousands of dollars of damage to the exhibition and taken a rock which will be very difficult to replace, all for perhaps $200 worth of gold.”
Pillans has asked locals to keep an eye out for the rock and immediately alert authorities if it is spotted.
