Cops in Connecticut and New Jersey are punishing drivers who are not cleaning snow from their cars.
Forgoing the car cleanup after a snowstorm poses some serious hazards and can land you in trouble. Cops in Connecticut and New Jersey are punishing drivers whose snow-covered vehicles create these 'ice missiles'.
The problem is that the ice and snow stuck to vehicles can fly off when traveling at high speeds, placing other drivers and pedestrians in danger that could potentially be fatal.
State troopers in both states have been issuing tickets to drivers who fail to clean their vehicles off . On January 1st, a law in Connecticut took effect, allowing cops to fine motorists for ice and snow riddled autos.
New Jersey's law pertaining to the same issue was enacted in 2010. Connecticut authorities have issued over 230 citations this year alone. The combined fines on those tickets totaled 27 thousand dollars.
New York doesn’t have a similar law but proponents of the fines are asking other states to take action. A spokesperson for the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut disagreed, however, pointing out it’s nearly impossible to remove all snow and ice from cars and drivers shouldn’t be reprimanded for small amounts.
