Police brutality: LA police forced woman to have sex, city pays her $500k

2014-02-19 9

The City Council of Los Angeles has agreed to pay a woman over half a million U.S. dollars in order to get her to drop a lawsuit. The unnamed woman had accused two L.A. narcotics division police officers of forcing her to have sex with them in exchange for leniency back in 2010.

Not content with getting away with it the first time, the woman alleges the two officers later visited her for more sex, with encounters taking place in their unmarked squad car, at her apartment and at a hotel. She claims she was too afraid of being sent back to prison to refuse the detective's advances.

The woman's lawsuit came on the heels of another woman's accusation that the two cops, identified as James Nichols and Luis Valenzuela, stopped her while she was walking her dog and ordered her into their car. The officers then allegedly demanded oral sex from the woman, who was also previously arrested by the detectives.

A pattern seems to have emerged, with the officers apparently demanding sexual favors from arrestees in exchange for some deal of leniency.

The city council paid the first woman the settlement money to avoid a trial, but that doesn't mean the officers will be getting off scot-free. The chief of the LAPD told reporters the two detectives will face a disciplinary committee soon and he insinuated they could be fired and could also face criminal charges.

Detective Valenzuela is a 16-year department veteran, and Detective Nichols has been with the L.A. police for 13 years. The department says a thorough investigation will take place and proper punishments will; be meted out if the two are found guilty.
