A blast at an anti-government rally in Bangkok wounded 36 people on Friday (January 17).

The blast took place at a rally led by protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban. The BBC reported that an explosive device, most probably a grenade, was thrown from a building. The bomb went off about 30 m from Suthep, who was unhurt.

Thirty-six protesters were wounded by the blast, at least seriously, according to Reuters. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.

Eight people have been killed and hundreds wounded in street violence since the protests began, according to AFP. The demonstrations are the biggest since pro-Thaksin protesters paralyzed Bangkok in April to May in 2010, which ended with a military crackdown and more than 90 people killed.
