Yamaguchi excited about state of women's figure skating

Coming to the Winter Olympics in Sochi is almost a welcome home for U.S. Olympic figure skating champion Kristi Yamaguchi.

Although she won her gold in France, any Olympics brings back many memories.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATING CHAMPION, KRISTI YAMAGUCHI, SAYING:

"The podium moment is probably one of my most vivid memories still. There are a few from the Olympics and that's one of (inaudible). I mean it's every single emotion that's out there. I mean there is a lot of pride and gratitude for all the people in thinking of everyone who was part of that journey of making it to the Olympics and then the little bit of bitter-sweet because you don't know if that's the end your Olympic moment and I didn't want it to end."

Although retired, Yamaguchi remains active on the ice.

She performed during the opening ceremony of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

And frequently appears at competitions around the world.
