Tsunami heartbreak : Man learns to dive so he can search for missing wife

2014-02-14 1

A Japanese bus driver from Onagawa Miyagi took a diving course in the hope of finding his wife, still missing following the 2011 tsunami, according to a Wednesday report in the local newspaper. The doting husband in his late 50s, Yasuo Takamatsu, received the certificated recently and began diving on Tuesday.

His 47-year-old wife Yuko was evacuated to the roof of a local bank during the devastating tsunami, but was engulfed by the waves, leaving her missing and presumed dead. Takamatsu received a last text from her before her death. It read "Are you alright? I wanna go home." Ever since then, he has combed wreckage and walked nearby beaches, searching in vain for his beloved Yuko.

He also kept a close eye on the Coast Guard Office's searches for survivors. This got him wondering whether he could continue the search himself. He then went to a local scuba learning centre in Ishinomaki Miyagi to learn diving. He reportedly studied for an hour each day in preparation to test for a diving certificate. And all his hard work paid off as he has now passed the test. He has now set about honing his skills as a fully-fledged diver for the summer and says he won't giving up diving until he finds Yuko.
