Michael Schumacher's supporters pay homage on his birthday outside the hospital where the German racing driver remains in an induced coma

Fans of Michael Schumacher have converged on a French Alps hospital today to honour the Formula One champion's 45th birthday, just days after he was critically injured in a ski accident.

Guliio Carissimo drove for four hours this morning to reach Grenoble Universty Hospital where Schumacher remains in an induced coma.

Wearing a Formula One Ferrari jacket and hat, he explained that he just had to be there for Michael's birthday "With all the joy he has given us".

Schumacher has been in a medically induced coma since Sunday when he struck his head on a rock while on a family holiday.

The seven-time F1 champion has since undergone two brain operations.

Doctors have refused to give a prognosis for Schumacher, saying they are focused on his immediate care.

Busloads of fans from Italy and Paris, France travelled to the hospital in Grenoble where he is being treated.

Schumacher is the most successful F1 driver in history, he racked up a record 91 race wins.

He retired from Formula One in 2012.
