A homeless man photographed sleeping rough on the freezing streets of Washington DC is reunited with his family after they spot his picture in a newspaper.

A press photographer who witnessed a homeless man huddled against an air vent in central Washington DC during some of the lowest temperatures to hit the US in two decades has helped reunite him with his family.

Jacquelyn Martin took the picture of Nick Simmons to illustrate the unusually cold weather in the region after a climatic phenomena known as a 'polar vortex' hit the country.

The photo was published in American newspaper USA Today where it was seen by his parents, who had reported their son missing on New Year's Day.

"I had a tweet from a reporter at USA Today and the reporter's tweet said something to the effect of 'A family whose son is missing has identified the gentleman in your picture as being their missing son Nick who's been gone since Wednesday. Would you please call the mother?" Ms Martin said.

Family friend Peter Gugino says 20-year-old Mr Simmons was discharged from a hospital Sunday night and spent the night in a Washington hotel with his father and older brother. Mr Gugino says the three men are now heading home by car to Greece, New York.
