Osaka Police arrested three Japanese old men on Wednesday for allegedly staging dozens of car crashes since 2011. The three accused men, Kenji Torigoe, Kiyotaka Hagimoto and Yasuo Hikita are currently on trial on charges of deliberately hitting a car causing the driver to hit one of them. The men had committed dozens of similar crashes over the past three years in the Kansai region, defrauding unwitting drivers out of several million yen.
The latest fake crash occurred in Hirakata Osaka in October. Two of the men were in a car while the one pretended to be a pedestrian. The two men in the car deliberately drove towards another car before suddenly steering toward the pavement. As a result, the other driver was forced to swerve, hitting the third member of the group who then asked the driver for 20,000 yen (US$200) compensation.
The three men confessed to all charges during questioning, claiming that they just wanted some money to have fun.
