At least 24 arrested in U.S.-Italy mafia bust

One by one, federal authorities in New York haul away suspects in an international crime ring bust.

The suspects are accused of being part of a major crime syndicate that police say conspired to smuggle huge amounts of drugs and weapons from South America to Italy.

Officials made the announcement in Rome.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ASSISTANT ATTORNEY MARSHALL MILLER SAYING:

"Earlier today, just after midnight in Brooklyn, New York and as the sun rose here in Italy, American and Italian law enforcement agents simultaneously conducted coordinated operations to strike at the heart of international organized crime. Working together, American and Italian officers executed two dozen arrests, conducted numerous lawful searches and made seizures of hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars."
