Eight miners trapped over a kilometre underground in a South African gold mine have been rescued. Emergency workers battled a through smoke and rubble to reach the workers and bring them to the surface.

An earthquake broke ventilation and water pipes and damaged power cables which caused a fire to break out deep underground.

Nine employees remain unaccounted for at Harmony Gold’s Doornkop mine near Johannesberg. Rescuers are working to find the nine alive.

South African gold mines are the deepest and some of the most dangerous in the world.

Five years ago, more than 80 suspected illegal workers died after an underground fire at a Harmony mine. Most of the victims suffocated.
