As Ukraine’s parliament hears calls for constitutional change, opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko emerged empty-handed from his latest talks with President Viktor Yanukovych on Tuesday.
The boxer turned politician accused President Yanukovych of “taking an irresponsible position” and “provoking people to take radical action”.
The opposition wants constitutional change to curtail powers accumulated by Yanukovych, such as appointing the prime minister and entire government as well as regional governors.
With crisis talks due to continue on Wednesday, Kyiv’s anti-Yanukovych demonstrators were spending another night in the cold.
At least six people have been killed in violence during what started as pro-EU protests.
Yanukovych triggered the uprising on the streets last November when he walked away from a trade deal with the European Union in favour of closer economic ties with Russia.
The increasingly tense situation in Ukraine continues to cause global concern.
Although there has been no violence in Kyiv for several days, Western governments have warned Yanukovych that it risks flaring up again unless he can find a compromise with the opposition.
