Lights, Camera and Suicide - Behind the glitter of the cinema industry marquee is a world of depression found too often among stars, mostly actresses, who opt to take their lives

Do glamour and depression go hand-in-hand?

Kunal Singh
Remember the Kadhalar Dhinam hero? Well, he committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. Kunal - who shot to fame in Kollywood due to the movie with director Kathir that had music by AR Rahman - featured in a few other Tamil movies too but was never able to make it to the top league. The reasons cited for his suicide include his strained relationship with his wife.

Monal
She came into the industry as Simran's sister and tinseltown had big dreams for her. With films like Paarvai Ondre Podhume and Badri, it looked like she was well on her way to the top, just like her elder sister. But when she was just 21, Monal took the extreme step, leaving many in the industry shocked. She had reportedly broken off a relationship with a choreographer just a few days before she committed suicide.

Divya Bharti
After completing more than a dozen films in three languages, Divya jumped from a five-storey apartment in Mumbai in 1993. Divya, who did Nila Penne in Tamil, was quick to rise in Tollywood with a few hits and then made it to Bollywood as well. Several theories, including some involving her husband, surrounding the cause of her death did the rounds at that
time.

Uday Kiran
He had a hat-trick of hits in the early 90s in Tollywood, and was billed to become a big star. He even acted under the direction of renowned filmmaker K Balachander in Tamil, in the film Poi. But, when this actor committed suicide recently, it sent shockwaves among many in the film industry. Uday reportedly took the extreme step after his fading stardom resulted in both a "financial crisis and depression".

Silk Smitha
Born Vijayalakshmi, this actress rose to fame thanks to Vinu Chakravathy's Vandichakkaram. She was henceforth known as 'Silk Smitha' and the name stuck. Her popularity scaled phenomenal heights and within a few years, 'Silk' had become a sensation. In the late 90s, she is said to have committed suicide by poisoning herself due to several problems, including financial and relationship issues.
