Big bank HSBC insults customers: 'Why do you want your money?'

2014-02-02 6

HSBC, Europe's largest bank is in trouble again.

We all know banks are eager to have your money but HSBC seems a little more eager than most. The bank is taking heat for restricting large withdrawals, asking customers what they need the cash for — and requiring written evidence.

Customers say they've not been told why and feel they're being treated like children. It's their money, after all. Some say staff refused to tell them exactly how much they can withdraw without invasive questioning and say they weren't made aware of any policy change.

The BBC reports that while other large banks reserve the right to ask questions about large cash withdrawals, none said they would demand evidence before they grant the withdrawal.

This embarrassing PR misstep comes after revelations in 2012 that the bank laundered nearly a billion US dollars for Latin American drug cartels over the course of many years.

HSBC paid a $1.9 billion fine for its illegal assistance to drug lords in laundering their money through the US financial system and making profit in the process, though not one individual went to trial or was banned from banking.
