A skydiving trip to celebrate her 16th birthday last week nearly turned fatal for Texas teenager Mackenzie Wethington after her parachute malfunctioned, sending her plummeting 3,500ft to the ground, according to a report by FOX-DFW.

The Joshua, Texas-native was no doubt more than excited to celebrate her Sweet Sixteen with a trip to Oklahoma to go skydiving for the first time.

"In Texas you have to be 18," Mackenzie's older sister, Meagan, told FOX-DFW. "You have to jump four times tandem -- with another person. In Oklahoma you only have to be 16."

Her first skydiving almost became her last, however, as soon after she jumped out of the skydiving plane, she was shocked to discover her primary parachute wouldn't open.
Mackenzie was sent plummeting thousands of feet downward before she hit the ground.

"God's hand caught her. Had to have been," said Meagan.

The miracle child, managed to survive the 3,500-foot fall and is currently in hospital with broken bones and internal injuries, but very happily alive.

"Even the nurses and doctors who heard about the story, they were like, 'How? How is she still here? She obviously, she hit the ground, but she did not hit the ground," said Meagan.
