Without a doubt, drones are taking on more and more tasks. In a case, believed to be the first of its kind, a farmer in North Dakota was recently convicted and put behind bars thanks to surveillance conducted by a Predator drone.

It all started back in June of 2011 when the suspect, Rodney Brossart was initially placed into cuffs, accused of stealing half a dozen cows from his neighbor.

It was that accusation that led to an armed standoff with police, after Brossart’s family members refused to allow cops on their 36 hundred acre property to investigate the claim.

Brossart was released on bail but failed to appear for his scheduled court dates. Warrants were also issued for Brossart’s sons but the family seemingly disappeared and wouldn’t respond to court notices.

That prompted the Nelson County Sheriff to request the U.S. Border Patrol to conduct surveillance over the family’s property using the drone. It gathered enough evidence for police to locate and arrest Brossart along with several family members in November that same year.

He recently landed in court. Although he was found not guilty of stealing the cows, he was however sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the standoff, but will only serve 6 months. Do you think using the Predator drone was justified in this case?
