Confusion in Italian politics is nothing new but there was an unprecedented scene of choas on Wednesday night when the parliamentary speaker angrily called for a vote after getting fed-up with a long debate.
The motion concerned the revalorisation of the capital of the Bank of Italy – a move that would allow it to rescue troubled institutions.
But Italy’s opposition Five-Star Movement led the protest against the what it deemed an effort to quash parliamentary procedure.
On Thursday, the Five Star Movement filed a motion to impeach Italy’s President Giorgio Napolitano, accusing him of abuse of power.
The censure vote has no chance of succeeding as the Five Star Movement is a minority force in parliament but such actions maintain its efforts to be a thorn in the side of the established political powers.
