Final verdict expected in Knox retrial

An Italian court is expected to deliver its final verdict in the Meredith Kercher murder retrial on Thursday.

Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted of killing the 21-year-old student in 2009.

Kercher's naked body was found with 40 stab wounds in the apartment she shared with Knox.

The verdict was overturned and they were freed from prison two years later.

A retrial was ordered after Italy's supreme court cited inconsistencies in the case.

Knox has remained in the United States throughout the retrial.

But in December she sent a letter to the court, pleading her innocence. She said she was afraid to appear in person, out of fear she would be sentenced to three decades in prison.

Sollecito has been in court on occasion and is expected to return for the verdict, along with the parents of Meredith Kercher.
