Freezing winter conditions pose a hazard to both humans and pets. Recently a dog named Duke became trapped on unsafe ice on the Delaware River in Trenton.

Due to freeing temperatures, an ice jam left the river completely unsafe. Duke seemed to sense the lurking danger. Instead of walking straight cross the icy surface, he walked back and forth between the Trenton and Pennsylvania sides.

Onlookers on both sections of the river snapped photos and did their best to lure Duke off the ice to get him to safety. Although the thought behind it was kind, the rescuers may have unintentionally frightened the canine even more.

Duke seemed terrified to walk towards them. For several hours, the Good Samaritans worked to get Duke on land. Eventually the Trenton Fire Department was called to the scene, but it was declared unsafe to send a crew on the ice.

That prompted two citizens Richard Hutchinson and another man to walk across the river, with a kayak to get Duke. They were successfully able to carry him to the shore.

He was taken to a local animal shelter to be reunited with his loving owner.
