ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

Long streams of red-hot lava flowed down Mt. Etna on Sunday (Jan 26) as Europe's tallest and most active volcano erupted again.

Smoke could be seen rising from Etna's craters and the lava flows which melted the snow on the volcano as they streamed down.

There were no reports of damage and the nearby Catania airport which had earlier been closed remained open on Sunday.

Etna, which is located above Catania, often erupts but rarely causes damage. Whilst the eruptions themselves do not put the local population at risk, the local inhabitants do have to live with the ash showers that follow.

The snow-capped volcano has been quite active over the last few months as a new south eastern crater has opened up.
