The R870 MCS shotgun is the first shotgun you unlock. It is very similar to the Stakeout of the original Call of Duty Black Ops, You have to uncock the R870 MCS each time you shoot. Shotguns by nature have very close range so much of the skill in using shotguns comes from moving on the map so that you are always in range when you encounter an enemy. Every shotgun has one major flaw in all of the Call of Duty games: it has an effective range and beyond that it cannot hit anything. The bullets disappear outside of your range. This means that you have to move around the map so that in every encounter you are inside your effective range. A lot of that is predicting where the enemies are. Use the mini map as a guide to where the enemies are.

Because you are always in the front lines of battle you are usually surrounded by all sorts of devices designed to kill you. Flack jacket and Tactical Mask reduces the number that can by giving extra protection towards explosives and lessening the effect that most tactical grenades have on you. Semtex grenades can be substituted for Frag Grenades based on your preferences. The same goes for the tactical grenades.
Because the R870 MCS uses so little ammunition you basically never have to worry about reloading or running out of ammunition. However, be sure to reload whenever you can do so safely. But this means that you don't need a secondary weapon like a pistol.
Shotguns are best when fired from the hip. There are very little advantages to aiming down the sights aside from an aesthetics stand point. The shotguns do not gain any more accuracy by aiming down the sights. Since you always shoot from the hip the Laser Sight will help you with each kill as it grants an accuracy bonus from the hip. Long Barrel increases the damage and range of the R870 MCS which is always a nice addition.
