In an effort to stop jaywalking and keep the streets safer for everyone involved, New York City's law enforcement authorities are handing out citations for jaywalkers.

Jaywalking in New York City is nothing to take lightly. During just the month of January, 9 people died while illegally crossing the street.

In an effort to curb jaywalking and keep the streets safer for everyone involved, law enforcement authorities are handing out citations for jaywalkers.

The latest fatality occurred on the Upper West Side. 26-year-old Samantha Lee tried to cross W. 96th St. but sadly was struck by two vehicles. The first, an ambulance, clipped her after which she was hit by a car.

Lee’s death was the third in one week. A little earlier in the month, on January 10th, an elderly man was killed while jaywalking. On the same day, only a short distance away a 9-year-old child was fatally hit by a cab.

In many cases, drivers are let off with only a citation after killing jaywalkers and that fact is leaving a bad taste in many resident mouths, who believe the focus should be on speeding and reckless driving.

Police have been handing out the jaywalking tickets left and right, ranging from $40 to $100 fines, with the hope to quickly stop the unnecessary deaths.
