The Netherlands has announced that it will cut output at Groningen, the largest gas field in western Europe, due to concerns about earth tremors.
“Studies showed that there are risks and consequences, including earthquakes,” Prime Minister Mark Rutte told reporters at his weekly press conference before the details were announced.
Gas production at Groningen will be reduced by a quarter over the next three years. The move is expected to reduce government revenue by 1 billion euros by 2016.
More than 1,000 tremors have been recorded in the area since 1986.
