Zoogoers could hardly control themselves when panda cub Bao Bao made her public debut at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Saturday.

Her name translates to 'precious'. She was born in August 2013.

Visitors were thrilled to see her in the spotlight for the first time.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ELYSE ADAMS, VISITOR FROM CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, SAYING:

"It's my son's birthday and that's what he wanted to do is come to D.C. to see the pandas, so we were very excited. We have been watching Bao Bao on the panda cam so we knew there was a chance she would be asleep this morning because she was awake at like six when we watched. So, it's been very exciting."

Her parents are giant pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian.

According to the zoo, there are only 1,600 pandas known to be living in the wild. 300 are in captivity, mainly in China.
