US President Barack Obama is expected to announce reforms to the way the National Security Agency (NSA) conducts its surveillance of Americans.

The announcement will be made on Friday and follows months of controversy sparked by revelations from former NSA contractor, Edward Snowden.

Forty years ago, the theft of documents from the FBI also led to public alarm over government spying, and eventual reform.

Al Jazeera's Shihab Rattansi met two of those involved in the heist, who have now gone public.
