MALAYSIANS SEE RED OVER PM’S KANGKUNG REMARK
Under fire for the drop in purchasing power and rising electricity and fuel prices, the head of the Malaysian government Najib Razak chose to push back in a recent speech by highlighting the recent reduction in the cost of “kangkung”, or water spinach, a very cheap vegetable that is widely eaten in Malaysia and can grow almost anywhere as long as there is water nearby.
His remark was met with a deluge of critical comments, with web users slamming the Prime Minister for being totally out of touch with reality by praising the low cost of a product that will barely have any impact on the day to day lives of ordinary Malaysians.
And of course the jokes soon followed. Najib Razak’s comments have been remixed in this track which is enjoying massive success on YouTube.
Others are suggesting water spinach could be the answer to everyone’s purchasing power problems. As these satirical photomontages doing the rounds on social networks would suggest, “kangkung” could replace the more expensive products, be used in fast food dishes for example, or as fuel for cars and even as a tobacco substitute in cigarettes…
And opposition politicians, like Anwar Ibrahim, have also seized the opportunity to take a swipe at government policie.
