With his family watching on, former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is laid to rest.

Considered a war hero at home, Sharon received a full state funeral on Monday.

Here's his son, Omri:

"Ariel, that's how I used to call you during most of my adult life. I had the privilege to be a part of the team who worked for you and with you... It was a great privilege to see how you treated the role of prime minister in a very serious way, with great respect and responsibility."

Sharon died at the age of 85 on Saturday after spending eight years in a coma caused by a massive stroke.

The burial at his family ranch in southern Israel's Negev desert drew hundreds of family, friends and public officials.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair each laid a wreath in honor of Sharon.

His death has reopened debate into his legacy.
