Thailand’s capital Bangkok braced itself for a complete shutdown as protesters on Monday morning began blockading major roads aiming to create traffic chaos.

It is the latest chapter in an ongoing conflict in which anti-government demonstrators want to topple Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban is spearheading the fight to oust the premier and eradicate the influence of her self-exiled brother, former PM Thaksin.

Yingluck has called a snap election for February 2 which Suthep has rejected fearing she will be re-elected by her supporters the numerous rural poor.
